There are several government services designed for seniors that can reduce housing costs including Housing and Urban Development (HUD) programs. HUD sets income limits to determine if you are eligible for assisted housing programs. These include Public Housing, Section 8 project-based, Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher, Section 202 housing for the elderly, and Section 811 housing for persons with disabilities programs.
Who Qualifies for HUD Housing?
HUD has created income limits that are based on median family income estimates and Fair Market Rent area definitions for each metropolitan area, parts of some metropolitan areas, and each non-metropolitan county.
The income threshold for the 2020-2021 benefit year is a maximum of $28,785 for a single senior, and $46,745 for a couple. This is calculated by using your income amount from the previous year to calculate your benefits for the current benefit year.
